Additonal Information

This is pre 1820 information mainly taken from actual images of UK parish registers and other primary sources which I have personally researched. Further information about the settlers and their families once they reached the Cape can be found at https://www.1820settlers.com/

BROWN, Thomas Saunders (aka Enos SAUNDERS) - Extra Data

A Thomas Saunders BROWN emigrated as a member of WILLSON's Party. His wife and children match exactly those of Enos SAUNDERS, and the death notices in the Cape Archives of his children Elizabeth Mary Saunders CHADWICK and Sarah Ann Saunders BROWN list their father as Enos SAUNDERS. Either Enos SAUNDERS changed his name when emigrating, or he died around 1819 and his widow Elizabeth married Thomas Saunders BROWN. No documents have been found to prove this either way.

London Metropolitan Archives

Enos SAUNDERS and Elizabeth LEGERTON were married by banns on 20 November 1804 in St.Saviour's, Southwark

Both signed

Witnesses: William SAUNDERS and Elizabeth [MONKE]

Enos son of Enos and Elizabeth SAUNDERS of Agnes Terrace baptised 17 November 1805 in St.Leonard, Shoreditch (born Oct 27th)

Elizabeth Mary daughter of Enos and Elizabeth SAUNDERS of Leonard Street baptised 7 May 1809 in St.Leonard, Shoreditch (born March 26th)

Sarah Ann daughter of Enos and Elizabeth SAUNDERS, Silver Street, Butcher, baptised 4 June 1815 in St.George in the East (born 13th May)

Joseph Francis son of Enos and Elizabeth SAUNDERS, New Road, Butcher, baptised 28 September 1817 in St. George in the East (born Sept. 2nd)

George Samuel son of Enos and Elizabeth SAUNDERS, New Road, Butcher, baptised 8 December 1819 in St.George in the East (born 28th Oct)

George is presumed to have died just prior to sailing as his name has been scored out on the Settler Return for WILLSON's Party.

As the last two children were born in New Road, it is possible that the letter written by Thomas BROWN (4) was written by Thomas Saunders BROWN
