Death Notice (Cape Archives) says he was born in Manchester ca 1786. Additional Death Notice gives him the name George Vale SMITH.

George SMITH, bachelor of Manchester, servantman, and Mary BENSON, spinster of Manchester were married by banns  on 19 March 1818 in St Mary, St Denys and St George, Manchester

Elizabeth Caroline daughter of George and Mary SMITH, Manchester, shopkeeper, baptised 19th January 1819 in St Mary, St Denys and St George, Manchester

[This fits with his original submission, where he says he has a 10 month old child, but she presumably died in infancy, as she does not appear on his final return.]
