pre 1820 Settler Correspondence before emigration

ALL the 1819 correspondence from CO48/41 through CO48/46 has been transcribed whether or not the writers emigrated to the Cape. Those written by people who did become settlers, as listed in "The Settler Handbook" by M.D. Nash (Chameleon Press 1987), are labelled 1820 Settler and the names of actual settlers in the text appear in red.

My Lord,

We the undersigned being very anxious to join the intended Colloney to the Cape of Good Hope and not possessing the means to engage the families humbly sollicit your Lordship's advice and information on the following points. We have been sollicited by Messrs. WHITLEY & Co of Liverpool, who inform us that they have engaged a number of families and that a ship will sail from thence.

Now we wish to know wether a vessel will be freighted from the port of Liverpool and when, and in such case if we could be permitted to join Messrs. WHITLEY & Co and we wish further to state to your Lordship that we can command the sum of £200 over and above the Government deposit and should be glad to be informed of the best goods or articles to take out to the intended Colony. Inclosed we have inserted a list of our families and occupations and remain your Lordship's humble servants
