WOOD, George - Extra Data

 

(member of SEPHTON's Party) 

According to the Settler Handbook he travelled to the Cape as an apprentice to Richard SMITH at the age of 14.

 

Death Notice (Cape Archives) says he was born in London in 1805, the son of George Alfred WOOD and Martha.

 

Memorial Inscription

"George WOOD born 1.5.1805 Kent, England died 1.11.1884 husband of Susan. Mr. WOOD was elected as one of the first members of the Legislative Council of the Colony and for many years was a valued member of the same. For 18 years he was a member of the Albany Divisional Council, and was also closely connected with nearly every public institution in this city, all of which derived benefit from his services. He was a member and officer of the boards of the Wesleyan Methodist Church and a liberal supporter of all its institutions."

 

His mother Martha married Henry POMEROY in 1814. Martha was not portrayed as a widow on the marriage licence.

Martha POMEROY was buried on 17 May 1843 in St.George's, Camberwell, aged 60. Her address was given as Kent Road.

 

Mary Ann POMEROY, half sister of George WOOD, went to the Cape. She married William WYNNE, son of Edward WYNNE.
