The 1820 Settler Correspondence
as preserved in the National Archives, Kew
 and edited by Sue Mackay

pre 1820 Settler Correspondence before emigration

ALL the 1819 correspondence from CO48/41 through CO48/46 has been transcribed whether or not the writers emigrated to the Cape. Those written by people who did become settlers, as listed in "The Settler Handbook" by M.D. Nash (Chameleon Press 1987), are labelled 1820 Settler and the names of actual settlers in the text appear in red.

August 3rd 1819

Gentlemen,

Having a wife and [ink blot obscuring number] small children and having scarce any imployment or prospect of gaining a sufficient withall to subsist them or myself without being obliged to become burthensome to the parish, take this opportunity of presenting myself to your notice as one who would gladly imbrace the opportunity offered by Colonial Department of becoming a settler abroad upon the plan now in agitation by and adopted by Government and your Colonial Department.

I am with submission and respect, Gentlemen

Your very obedient humble servant

Charles QUINNELL
