pre 1820 Settler Correspondence before emigration

ALL the 1819 correspondence from CO48/41 through CO48/46 has been transcribed whether or not the writers emigrated to the Cape. Those written by people who did become settlers, as listed in "The Settler Handbook" by M.D. Nash (Chameleon Press 1987), are labelled 1820 Settler and the names of actual settlers in the text appear in red.

Honoured Sir,

We whose names are hereto affixed being desirous of emigrating to the Cape will feel obliged by answers to the following questions:

1stly If we pay our passage out what advantage shall we derive more than if we went out under the restrictions laid down by Government.

2ndlyWhat part of the Colony is it possible we may be settled and how far from the Cape.

3rdlyCan seed and agricultural implements be procured there as reasonable as here.

4thly Shall we be obliged to go exactly at the time the transports go.

5thly Is their any tenements fit for the [obscured] of a family.

6thly Should we be obliged to go with the transports what furniture shall we be allowed to take.

Lastly, should there be no obligation to go [by] the transports will be thankful for information as to the best way of getting there and the portion of land allotted to each at the Cape.

We have received your letter of the 17 inst and perfectly agree with your proposals. We wish to know when we should make application for the letter of recommendation for the grant of land as we intend to pay our own passage. An early answer would oblige
