BRADSHAW, Samuel and Richard - Extra Data
Samuel BRADSHAW, a single man, was the leader of BRADSHAW's Party. According to The Settler Handbook: "Richard BRADSHAW (a brother of Samuel BRADSHAW) and Samuel BIRT were on the party's location in 1824 and claimed to have been original members of BRADSHAW's Party. Their names do not appear on the Agent's Returns, but they may have sailed in place of men who dropped out of the party."
Death Notice (Cape Archives) for Samuel Harper BRADSHAW says he was born in Cam, Gloucestershire, parents unknown, ca 1784
Death Notice (Cape Archives) for Richard BRADSHAW says he was born in Coaley, Gloucestershire, the son of Richard and Hannah BRADSHAW, ca 1777. In addition the letter written by Richard to his wife Elizabeth (who was still in Gloucestershire) in 1833, imploring her to join him, suggests that he also had siblings called William, Hannah and Esther.

Samuel son of Richard and Sarah BRADSHA [sic] baptised 7 June 1784
This is the only baptism I can find for a Samuel BRADSHAW at the right period, and his mother is given as Sarah, not Hannah. I cannot find any second marriage for Richard, so either the vicar made a mistake with the name or Richard and Sarah were not married. Samuel at death had the middle name HARPER. There is a burial on 17 January 1838 (after Richard's letter home) of a William Harper BRADSHAW in Cam, aged 61, so this may well be Richard and Samuel's brother, mentioned in the 1833 letter, who also had the middle name Harper.
Elizabeth, wife of Richard BRADSHAW, never did travel to the Cape. She died in Uley, Gloucestershire and was buried in St.Giles Church, Uley on 31 March 1862, aged 85. The 1851 census for Uley (HO107/1959 folio 300 p.4) shows Elizabeth living at Crawley, Uley with her granddaughter Matilda HURCOMBE, described as a pauper (formerly dressmaker), and born in Berkely, Gloucestershire.
Elizabeth daughter of Abraham GAZARD of The Heath was baptised on 13th March 1777 in Berkeley, Gloucestershire
