Christmas Steps

Bristol, Christmas Steps. The steps were constructed in September 1669 and were paid for by wealthy wine merchant, Jonathan Blackwell. Prior to this there had been a steep, muddy lane leading from the bridge over the Frome outside the city walls near the old St Bartholomew's Hospital, towards St Michael's church. The street was called Queen Street in medieval times but was changed to Christmas Steps about 1775 owing to its proximity to Christmas Street. Members of HOLDER's Party would have known some of the shops and pubs on Christmas Steps.
