The iconic Houses of Parliament and Palace of Westminster today only date from 1834. The old Palace of Westminster,  destroyed by fire on 16 October 1834, would have been the sight familiar to members of the London Parties. On the adjacent site now occupied by Portcullis House and Westminster Tube Station stood Manchester Buildings, the address from which John BAILIE wrote his letters to the Colonial Office.
