Dear Sir
I take the liberty of troubling you with this Letter in consequence of an application made to me by Mr John MANDY, a Master Carpenter at Lambeth Marsh, but a native of this Parish, Chislehurst, Kent - I have known his whole family all my life and have constantly employed them in their different trades They are honest, sober and industrious people. This John MANDY asked me to recommend him to you as a person to be allowed to go to the New Colony at the Cape of Good Hope. I really believe him to be of a very good character. He has a wife and two children and he is 30 years old. If
the Colony are all of such good materials it will probably succeed. Allow me then to solicit your favour & protection to my countryman. I have named J MANDY to Mr B.BARNARD, who must also well know the family
I have the honour to be Sir,
Your Obedient Servant
SYDNEY
