as preserved in the National Archives, Kew
 and edited by Sue Mackay

pre 1820 Settler Correspondence before emigration

ALL the 1819 correspondence from CO48/41 through CO48/46 has been transcribed whether or not the writers emigrated to the Cape. Those written by people who did become settlers, as listed in "The Settler Handbook" by M.D. Nash (Chameleon Press 1987), are labelled 1820 Settler and the names of actual settlers in the text appear in red.

My Lord,

Independent of the list of names handed me by the Church Wardens of the Parish of Tottenham there are a few more persons whose names are annexed to this from the Parishes of Stoke Newington, Edmonton, Hackney, Poplar, South Lambeth and St.Pancras, who are willing to proceed under my direction to the Cape of Good Hope and for whom I am willing to comply with the terms specified in the circular issued by His Majesty's Government. An early answer to this stating whether I am approved of will greatly oblige your Lordship's

Most obedient and humble servant

Daniel BEALEY

The Churchwardens of this parish at the request of Mr. BEALEY dutifully inform him for the satisfaction of the proper officers of the Government that they propose to send under him the undermentioned persons to the projected colony of the Cape of Good Hope and to advance the Monies required by Government on their account on such conditions as shall be deemed reasonable by them, provided a grant of land shall be obtained by Mr. BEALEY in respect of such persons and they also add that such emigration will be perfectly voluntary on the part of the persons nominated and will tend to the relief of a parish exceedingly oppressed by poor.
