SADLER, Thomas - Extra Data

(member of BUTLER's Party)

Death Notice (Cape Archives) says he was born in Colchester, Essex in 1799/1800. The Settler Handbook says he was the son of William SADLER, Captain of the Fanny, in which BUTLER's Party sailed to the Cape. Thomas did not appear in the Settler Returns but his name was included in a list of BUTLER's settlers relocated to Albany (Cape Archives CO136)

Most trees seem to have Thomas as the older brother of William Stebbing SADLER, who was the son of William SADLER and Sarah STEBBING, baptised in Little Horkesley, Essex on 3 November 1803 and born on 7 January 1802. His father William SADLER married Sarah STEBBING in St.Peter & St.Paul, Clare, Suffolk on 30 December 1788. However, this William SADLER was NOT a sea captain but a vicar of the Church of England, as shown by the Suffolk marriage records and also in the Clergy Database, which says he was born in Great Horkesley, Essex and was the vicar of Clare.

Thomas's middle name was Farrar. There is a will for a Thomas FARROW of Langham, Essex, which begins "I Thomas FARROW otherwise FARRAR of Langham..." I started searching for Farrow as well as Farrar, and have found a very interesting baptism in St.Mary the Virgin, Ardleigh (now a suburb of Colchester) for January 19th 1801 - Thomas Furrow the son of Margaret SADLER. The middle name does appear to be Furrow rather than Farrow, but with so many people being illiterate the vicar would just have written down the name as he heard it pronounced with an Essex burr. Could this possibly be Thomas's baptism if his mother died and he was brought up by relatives? If he was illegitimate it might also explain why no parents are listed on his Death Notice.
