OBITUARY

MRS. SELINA MUSSON.
We regret to report the death, which occurred from heart failure, at Grey's Hospital yesterday morning, of Selina MUSSON, wife of Mr. W.J. MUSSON, the well-known citizen and formerly one of the most successful building contractors in Maritzburg. The deceased, who was married to Mr. MUSSON in 1887 (Jubilee year), came, like her husband, from the Isle of Wight, and during her eighteen years' residence in the City, enjoyed a wide circle of friends, by all of whom her death will be deeply mourned. For nineteen weeks the late Mrs. MUSSON had suffered from an affection of the heart, brought on by overstraining in an attempt on the part of the deceased lady to draw one of the boats on the river to its moorings.
The funeral will take place at three o'clock this afternoon, leaving the Rustic Tea Rooms and proceeding to the Church of England Cemetery.

The death has occurred of Lieut.-Col. Sir William CARINGTON, Keeper of His Majesty's Privy Purse. – Reuter's Special Service.

Lieut.-Col. the Rt. Hon. Sir William H.P. CARINGTON, K.C.B., has been Keeper of the Privy Purse since 1910, and was Controller and Treasurer to the Prince of Wales from 1901. He was the second son of Baron CARINGTON, and was born in 1845. He was formerly Lieut.-Colonel of the Grenadier Guards and served in the Egyptian Campaign of 1882. He was Liberal M.P. for Wycombe 1868 – 1883.

KING CHARLES OF ROUMANIA

It is announced from Petrograd that King Charles of Roumania is dead. – Reuter's Special Service.

King Charles I. of Roumania was born on April 20th, 1839, and was the son of the late Prince Carl of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen. He was elected Lord of Roumania on April 20th 1866, and proclaimed King on March 26th, 1881. He was married on November 15th, 1869, to Princess Elizabeth von WIED ("Carmen Sylva") who was born in 1843. As there were no children of the marriage, the succession was accepted by the King's brother, Prince LEOPOLD, on behalf of his son, William.
In 1889, William renounced his claim in favour of his brother Ferdinand.

MR. TOM GALLON

The death is announced of Mr. Tom GALLON, the novelist and dramatist. – Reuter's Special Service.

Mr. GALLON was born in London on 5th December, 1866. He started life as a clerk in a city office, became usher in a large private school, and eventually secretary to a provincial Mayor. Ill-health compelled him to give up work, and he afterwards devoted himself to short-story and novel writing. He produced over 30 novels, and half-a-dozen plays. He was unmarried.

MAJOR-GENERAL KEKEWICH
London, November 5.
The death took place in Devonshire today of Major-General KEKEWICH, the defender of Kimberley. – Reuter's Special Service.

Major-General R.G. KEKEWICH was born on July 17th, 1854, and was a member of a Devon family. He was educated at Marlborough, and entered the Army in 1874. He served in the Malay Peninsula, the Nile Expedition (D.A.A.G. and K.M.G.) and Suakin. His defence of Kimberley for 126 days (from October 15th, 1899, to February 16th, 1900) is historical. He was Lieut.-Colonel in the Loyal North Lancs and Colonel of the Buffs. At the time of his death he was on the retired list.

I regret to announce the death, which occurred last night, after a very short illness, of Mrs. BUCKLE, of Windermere Road. The deceased lady was the wife of Mr. W.C. BUCKLE, financial manager to Messrs. P. Davis and Sons, Limited and had endeared herself to a wide circle of friends and acquaintances. Sympathetic condolences to her bereaved husband and relatives are tendered. The funeral took place to-day.

OBITUARY

SIR HENRY E.G. BULWER
The funeral of the late Sir Henry E.G. BULWER, a brother of the late General Sir Edward BULWER, and a nephew of Lord LYTTON, took place in Heydon Church, Norfolk, on October 4th. The chief mourners were Mr. and Mrs. W. BULWER, nephew and niece; Col. and Mrs. BULWER, nephew and niece, and many ohter relations. A numerous congregation in church, and at the graveside included the Earl of Orford, Sir Alfred JODRELE, Bt., Mr. Neville P. JODRELE, Major COLLINS, and many other friends in the country.
The service was conducted by the Rev. B.J. ARMSTRONG, formerly Rector of Heydon, and the Rev. G. Payne COOK, and was choral. Two hymns were sung, viz.: "Peace, perfect Peace" and "Lead Kindly Light," and at the close of the service the organist played, the Death March from Saul." The coffin, which was covered with beautiful flowers, bore the inscription on the brass breastplate: "Henry Ernest Gasgoyne BULWER, Knight, G.C.M.G., born 1836, died September 30th, 1914."
The bearers were eight of the employees of the estate. The earth grave situate to the north of the Chancel on the borders of the churchyard was lined with lovely ferns and Virginian creeper. There were many lovely floral tributes, including one "With deep regret for Sir Henry BULWER, whose services for Cyprus as High Commissioner, 1886 – 1892, have never ceased."

MR. T.B. LLEWELLYN

We regret to have to record the death of a well known City resident, Mr. T.B. LLEWELLYN, which took place at 4.30 yesterday afternoon at Grey's Hospital. Mr. LLEWELLYN suffered only a brief illness. He was removed to the hospital on Saturday owing to an internal complaint, not proving amenable to treatment. It was then found that an operation was necessary, but from this the patient never recovered. Mr. LLEWELLYN was well known to a large circle, including all interested in cricket, being the father of several keen cricketers, including the Hampshire professional, who took part in the South African tour in England.
He was a native of Pembroke, Wales, and came to Natal more than 40 years ago, previous to which his life had been spent on the sea, and he attained the rank of captain in the merchant service. After a short stay at Durban Mr. LLEWELLYN came to Maritzburg, where has resided ever since. It will be among the Temperance and Friendly Societies of the City that he will be missed, as for well over 30 years he was a most devoted and ardent worker. He was a foundation member of the Ark of Safety Tent of the Independent Order of Rechabites, of which Order he instituted a branch here in 1877, and was in office up to a recent date. In fact, it was only last year that the local Rechabites presented Bro.LLEWELLYN with a testimonial on the occasion of his retiring from an office he had held continuously for 33 years. He had also been connected with the Grand Lodge of Natal of the Independent Order of Good Templars from his arrival in Natal, having held nearly every office in the Order. He leaves a widow and five sons.
The funeral takes place from the residence, No. 5, Stranack Street, at five o'clock this afternoon, proceeding to the Wesleyan Cemetery.

MRS. JOHN OXLEY OXLAND

We regret to announce the death of Mrs. John Oxley OXLAND, which took place at Grey's Hospital just before midnight on Monday, after a lingering illness. Her husband, the Rev. OXLAND, pre-deceased her four years ago.
Mrs. OXLAND came to Natal with Bishop and Mrs. CALLAWAY, as their adopted daughter, in the early sixties, and was their right hand in Missionary labours at Springvale, Natal. Subsequently, when the Bishop moved to St. Andrew's Mission Station, in Pondoland, where he founded the Diocese of St. John's, Kaffraria, of which he was first Bishop, Mrs. OXLAND accompanied him, and was there married to the Rev. John Oxley OXLAND, who had come out from England to join the Mission.
Some years later her husband was given charge of the Clydesdale Mission in East Griqualand, and it was there that she spent the last eight devoted years of her Missionary life. The sympathy of a large circle of friends is extended to the bereaved surviving members of the family, Lionel and Bertram (sons) and her daughter (Mrs. McCAUL). The funeral will leave Grey's Hospital this afternoon at 4.45 o'clock, proceeding to St. Saviour's Cathedral, where a short service will be held, prior to the interment in the Church of England Cemetery.

MR. FRANK SEAGER

Mr. Frank SEAGER, who passed away on his farm "Minster," near Mossdale, in Newcastle district, on the 2nd of this month, was a man well-known and appreciated throughout the Province by his sterling qualities and upright living. Of Somersetshire parents, the late Mr. SEAGER spent the greater part of his life near Camperdown, where he married a Miss CRAWLEY, only removing to the Northern Districts after the Boer War. Apart from his striking personality, which bore eloquent testimony of his honourable life, he was in every sense of the word a benefactor and friend to many young men, who to-day must feel that they have not only lost a friend, but one who interested himself in their personal welfare. As a sportsman and a supporter of all manly exercises, Mr. SEAGER was in the front list. His colours were often seen on the racecourse; a first-class shot, and president of the Mossdale Cricket Club, his loss to Mossdale is irreparable. Paralysis brought him to his bed, and to his widow, sons and daughters, the deepest sympathy is extended in their sad affliction.

The Hon. Sir Edward Philip SOLOMON was a son of the late Rev. Edward SOLOMON. He was educated at the School for the Sons of Missionaries at Blackheath, and at the Gymnasium, Old Aberdeen. He was admitted a solicitor in 1868, and practised at Kingwilliamstown and Capetown.
He removed to Johannesburg in 1887, where he became senior member of the firm of Solomon and Thomson and subsequently of the firm of Solomon, Hull, Webber and Wentzel, from which he retired in 1905. He was the initiator of the Responsible Government Association, which had for its object the securing of Responsible Government for the Transvaal. He became President of the Association, and when that form of government was granted, he was elected President of the Transvaal National Association. In 1907 he was elected to the Transvaal House of Assembly for the Fordsburg Division of Johannesburg, and was Minister of Public Works in General Botha's Administration until 1910, when he was elected Senator in the Union Parliament. He received his K.C.M.G. on New Year's Day, 1911. He married a daughter of the Rev. W.R. THOMSON, by whom he had four sons and two daughters.

MR J. POINTER, M.P.

The death has occurred of Mr. Joseph POINTER, the Labour member of Parliament for the Attercliffe Division of Sheffield. – Reuter's Special Service.

Deceased was born on 12th June, 1875. He joined the United Patternmakers' Association at the age of 20, after serving his apprenticeship as an engineer's patternmaker. By that body he was elected Parliamentary representative in 1908: he was elected City Councillor for Sheffield in 1908. He was a Socialist, a local preacher and total abstainer.

MASTER F.W. JARDINE

The death took place at Maritzburg College on Wednesday evening of Master F.W. JARDINE, one of the pupils of the institution. The deceased, who was seventeen years of age, was taken seriously ill early on Wednesday evening. Dr. WARD, the District Surgeon was called in, but despite all that medical aid could do, young JARDINE died at 11.30. JARDINE, who had always been in a delicate state of health, had been a pupil of the College for come two years; and the news of his death on Thursday morning cast a gloom over the whole school. His parents reside at Elandskop.
The funeral took place from the College on Thursday afternoon, and proceeded to the Presbyterian Cemetery, where the Rev. Dr. SMITH and the Rev. R.Y. WHITTON conducted the last rites. The chief mourners were Mr. J. JARDINE (father), and Messrs. JOHN (uncle) and Cecil JARDINE (cousin). The pupils of the school were also present at the graveside, in addition to the members of the College Staff and old boys.
There were a number of beautiful wreaths and floral tributes from: Mr. and Mrs. J. JARDINE; The Headmaster, Maritzburg College; The Staff and Boys; and the Matron and Assistant Matron.

SIR GEORGE R. VYVYAN, K.C.M.G..
Last mail brought the news of the death of Sir G.R. VYVYAN, K.C.M.G., at the age of 76, after a short illness. He was at one time well-known in South Africa, as he commanded some of the Union Company's steamers in the 70's, the "Syria" and the "Roman." He married Blanche Henrietta, daughter of the late Archbishop Gray, of Capetown. He retired from the Union Company's service, and became, first an Elder Brother, and then Deputy Master of the Trinity House, H.M. King George being Master. He was greatly beloved and respected by all who knew him, and they were not a few. The deceased gentleman was the brother of the Rev. T.G. VYVYAN, of Richmond, and a cousin to the Bishop of Zululand.

OBITUARY

MR. WM. WITHYCOMBE
We regret to record the death, which took place early yesterday morning, of an old and esteemed fellow townsman, in the person of Mr. William WITHYCOMBE, at the age of fifty-nine. The late Mr. WITHYCOMBE developed a severe attack of enteric fever some six weeks ago. He afterwards contracted a chill, followed by pneumonia, and eventually he succumbed to the disease at three o'clock yesterday morning. The deceased gentleman was born at Dartmoor, Devonshire, in 1856, and entered the Royal Navy in the year 1871. He came to Natal in January, 1881, with the Naval Contingent which was sent to take part in the first Boer War, and was engaged on the naval transport staff with the late Captain (afterwards Admiral) H.G. ANDOE. He retired from the Navy in March, 1882, and took up an appointment in the Port Department at the Point. He was later transferred to the signal station at the Bluff, where he remained until 1889, when he came to Maritzburg to join the secretarial staff of the City and Suburban and other Gold Mining Companies. In 1883 he was married to Miss Harriet Agnes AIRTH, daughter of the late Captain Alexander AIRTH, for many years Port Captain of Durban, and a notable figure in the early history of Natal.
The late Mr. WITHYCOMBE was noted throughout Natal as a keen rifle shot and an enthusiastic supporter of shooting organisations. In 1892 he organised, in conjunction with Mr. (now Major) T.M. OWEN and the late Mr. J.E. DAVIES, the Maritzburg Rifle Association, with which he was prominently associated throughout its existence, and of which he had been, for some years prior to this death, a vice president. He was also a member of the council of the Natal Rifle Association, and as such had done much to promote the spread of a better knowledge of rifle shooting in the community. Himself a keen and accomplished marksman, Mr. WITHYCOMBE represented Maritzburg against Durban in the annual intertown competitions on no fewer that nineteen occasions in the years 1890 to 1909. He was a foundation member of the Natal Naval Volunteers (now the R.N.V.R.), serving as Chief Petty Officer up to the time of his transference to Maritzburg. Later he joined the old Natal Royal Rifles, and for some time held the rank of Quartermaster. The news of his death will come as a sad shock to his many friends in the City, where he was widely known and much respected. In shooting circles his kindly personality will be severely missed; and to his widow and family much sympathy will be extended in their bereavement. The funeral takes place this afternoon, leaving the residence in Longmarket Street, at 4.30, and proceeding to the Church of England Cemetery.

MR. C.H. MITCHELL, M.P.C.

The death occurred this morning, at the Sanatorium, Durban, of Mr. C.H. MITCHELL, of Fascadale, near Port Shepstone. Mr. MITCHELL was a member of the Provincial Council for Umzimkulu, having succeeded Mr. John KIRKMAN. During the last session of the Council, his health broke down, and he was admitted to Grey's Hospital and treated for an affection of the throat. After a partial recovery, he went back to his farm at Fascadale. From that time he was not in the best of health, and about five weeks ago the old trouble returned, and he entered the Sanatorium at Durban. He seemed to get much better, and some days ago bright hopes were entertained of his recovery, but some complications of the lungs set in, with a fatal termination. The deceased leaves a wife and family. Mrs. MITCHELL was in attendance on her husband at the time of his death.
Mr. MITCHELL came to South Africa as a youth for the benefit of his health, and was associated for a time with Mr. John HARDY of Pietermaritzburg. He took up farming and storekeeping, at what is now known as "Fascadale," and resided there from 15 to 20 years. Mr. MITCHELL was held in high esteem by the farming community of the Union, and for three years was President of the Natal Agricultural Union. In 1913 he was President of the South African Agricultural Union, and at the Conference of that body at Durban in August last year the writer was able to notice how popular Mr. MITCHELL was with his brother farmers of the Union. He was a kindly man, of pleasing personality, and was a fluent and incisive speaker.
The news of his death will be received throughout South Africa with the greatest regret. Mr. S. WOOLLATT, of Mooi River, President of the Natal Agricultural Union, at present on a visit to Durban, was deeply sympathetic when informed of the death of Mr. C.H. MITCHELL. Mr. WOOLLATT had been associated with the deceased gentleman in connection with the affairs of the Natal Agricultural Union, and had found him ready at all times to do anything in his power to further the interests of South African agriculture. A tribute to the excellent qualities of Mr. MITCHELL was also paid by Mr. Duncan M. EADIE, whose position as Secretary to the Natal Agricultural Union brought him into close touch with the deceased. Mr. EADIE had known Mr. MITCHELL for many years, and he emphasised the fact that the farmers of South Africa had lost a true champion and one whose place it would be no easy matter to fill.
The funeral takes place to-morrow afternoon at Port Shepstone.

REAR-ADMIRAL MAHAN

Rear Admiral Alfred T. MAHAN is more generally known to the British public as Captain MAHAN, a prolific author on naval matters. He was an native of West Point, New York, and was 74 years of age. He was the son of a professor of military engineering at the Military Academy, West Point, and was himself educated at the Naval Academy. He was the recipient of degrees from Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, Yale, M'Gill and Columbia universities. He received his appointment to the U.S. Navy in 1856, and served through the civil war. His duty subsequently took him to the South Atlantic, Pacific, Asiatic and European stations. In 1886 he was appointed President of the Naval War College. As commander of the "Chicage," with the European squadron in 1893 he formed a large circle of friends in Britain, and in 1899 he represented the States at the Peace Conference at the Hague. His most notable literary work was the "Influence of Sea Power upon History," a volume which was published in 1890, and remains unique. It is most unfortunate that the author has not been permitted the opportunity of adding a final chapter dealing with the existing situation. MAHAN's "Short History of the South African War" was another work which attracted widespread attention, and which showed the author to be possessed of a deeper discernment that the majority of the historians of 1900.

MRS. WM. COMINS

The news of the death of Mrs. Wm. COMINS, of Merrivale, though not unexpected, will come with a sense of keen regret to her many relatives and friends in Natal. The eldest daughter of the late Richard MATTISON, of New Park, near Maritzburg, and of Mrs. MATTISON, now of 226, Pine Street, Maritzburg, she comes of a family well known throughout this Province; and she leaves a husband, three daughters and two sons, with whom great sympathy is felt. In December, 1877, she was married to Mr. Wm. COMINS, then farming in the York district, from whence they moved, in 1886, to Bursea, in the uplands of Weenen County, where they spent the greater part of their married life. A year ago, when they retired to Merrivale, after a strenuous life at Bursea, and it seems hard that they were not permitted to enjoy longer together the fruits of their labours. Though of a retiring disposition, one had but to know Mrs. COMINS to love her as one who has had the privilege of being a near neighbour of her's for many years, the writer can testify to her many sterling qualities of character, and as a true friend and neighbour, one could ask for no better. A sad feature of the case is that the youngest son, Mr. Vernard COMINS, is at present in German South-West Africa, with the Natal Carbineers, and was therefore, unable to be with his mother at the last.

The late Sir John BARKER, 1st Baronet, was born in 1840, and was the son of the late Mr. Joseph BARKER, of Noose, Maidstone. He was an Alderman of the First London County Council, and was the founder and chairman of John Barker and Co, Ltd., Kensington. He contested Maidstone in 1888, and again in 1898, and was created M.P. in 1900. From 1906 – 1910 he was M.P. for Penrhyn and Falmouth. He was a member of the Royal Agricultural Society of England, and of several other sporting bodies.
