THE LATE MR. LOUBSER
Port Elizabeth, July 2.
A tribute was to-day paid to the memory of the late Mr. LOUBSER, at a meeting of the Port Elizabeth Town Council, and the Mayor said that for years past Mr. LOUBSER had always been in the forefront of every good work, and never spared himself in his efforts for the advancement of the City. OBITUARY

MRS. P.R.N. VERMAAK

Dundee, July 4.
With deepest feelings of sorrow the sad duty falls upon me of recording the death of Mrs. P.R.N. VERMAAK, which took place on Wednesday last. The deceased lady contracted an internal disease last August, and, on the advice of her medical adviser at Vryheid, went down to Dr. McKENZIE's Nursing Home in Durban, where an operation was performed, at which the highest medical skill available was present. It was thought then, in fact Dr. McKENZIE expressed himself as being perfectly satisfied, that the last trace of the fell disease had been removed, and its recurrence was not to be feared, and all looked forward to seeing Mrs. VERMAAK's perfect restoration to health and strength again, but dreaded disease again made its appearance early this year, and in April last she was again taken to Durban, and, on her removal to Dr. McKENZIE's Hospital, a second operation was considered necessary, which was carried out under the supervision of the best medical talent in the Colony, but all was of no avail, and, after almost incredible suffering, the final call came, and she succumbed on Wednesday morning last. Through all the long weeks and months of intense pain and suffering the deceased lady maintained a most noble and heroic fortitude. Of a bright and happy nature she was sustained all through by a perfect faith and trust in Heaven and no word of murmuring or complaint passed her lips during her long period of suffering; her religion was her stay and support, and though it was not of the aggressive or loudly professed stamp, yet no one had the blessing of her friendship, as was the writer's privilege, could fail to be benefited by the fragrance of her pure life, which, like a delicate perfume, exhaled from her every action. All that human skill and knowledge could do had been done on her behalf, no shred of possibility, however remote, was neglected, cables were sent to Europe for medical advice and medicines, but all were fruitless, and those who loved her so well can only try to say "Thy will be done."
The funeral took place on Thursday, July 2, from her father's house at Strydfontein, Doornberg, and from all round the district, from Dundee, Vryheid, and Helpmakaar, friends and sympathisers gathered in large number to pay their last tribute of respect to one who was so well beloved, and to extend their sympathies to the bereaved.
The deceased lady was the youngest daughter of the late Mr. HAMBRIDGE, who was one of the early pioneers of the Colony, and is survived by her devoted husband and five young children (daughters, also by her aged mother, brothers and sister, and to all of them, in their overwhelming sorrow the deepest sympathy is extended.

The death occurred yesterday morning of Mrs. CAITHNESS, wife of Mr. F.J.R. CAITHNESS, late manager of the Paarl Ophir Gold Mining Co., at her residence, Glen Ohpir, Johannesburg. Mrs. CAITHNESS was a pioneer of the Rand and a member of the WHITEHEAD family, one of the oldest families in the Eastern Province.

OBITUARY

MRS. SARAH HANNAH COX
We regret to report the death, after a short illness, of Mrs. Sarah Hannah COX, wife of Mr. Alfred COX, proprietor of the Polo Tavern. The late Mrs. COX, was born at Burnley in 1870, was taken seriously ill only a few days ago, with pneumonia and pleurisy, and on Wednesday was removed to the Sanatorium, where, despite all that medical aid could do, she passed peacefully away at three o'clock yesterday morning. The deceased lady had been a resident of this City practically all her life, and during her sojourn here made a large circle of friends, who will join in extending sympathy to the bereaved relatives who mourn her loss.
The funeral, which was largely attended, too place yesterday afternoon, leaving the residence in West Street at 4.45, and proceeding to the Church of England cemetery, where the service was conducted by the Rev. LOVIBOND.
The chief mourners were:- Mr Alfred COX (husband), Miss Ada COX (daughter), Mr R CHISNELL (father), Mr W CHISNELL (brother), Mrs SUTTON and Mrs APPLEBY (sisters), Mr SW STUTTON (brother-in-law) and Mrs ODELL (niece).

MRS. SINCLAIR LISTON
We regret to report the death of Mrs. Sinclair LISTON, widow of the late Mr. Sinclair LISTON, one-time estate agent to the Hon. Marshall CAMPBELL, which occurred at three o'clock on Wednesday at the residence of her brother-in-law, Mr. J. GOULDSTONE, 8, May Street. The deceased, who was 55 years of age, had been ailing for a few days, and within a few hours of her death gave no signs of her approaching demise. Mr. J. GOULDSTONE is a member of the Criminal Investigation Department.
The funeral took place yesterday afternoon, the cortege leaving May Street at 3.15 and proceeding to the Church of England Cemetery, where the burial service was conducted by the Rev. LOVIBOND. Those present at the graveside included Messrs. J. GOULDSTONE, W. CHAPMAN, and J. BAILLEY (brothers-in-law), F. CHAPMAN, D. FORSYTH, Rupert HOLLIDAY, and Daniel BAILLEY.
A large number of wreaths testified to the esteem and affection in which the deceased lady was held.

The many friends of Mr. and Mrs H.J. COMINS, of Sevenoaks, will learn with regret of the death of their infant daughter, Alice Mary, who died in the Sanatorium on Wednesday morning. Much sympathy will be felt for the sorrowing parents in the loss which they have sustained. The funeral took place yesterday afternoon at the Church of England Cemetery.

OBITUARY

THE LATE MR. CHAS. WOODHOUSE
The death occurred at the Natal Club at 10.30 on Sunday night of Mr. Chas. WOODHOUSE, for many years connected with the Natal Club, and previously with Mrs. WOODHOUSE, conducted the Standard Bar, succeeding Mr. McCORMACK. Mr. WOODHOUSE, who had been ailing for some years past, leaves a widow, a grown-up son and several daughters to mourn his loss.
The funeral took place from the Natal Club at 3.15 yesterday afternoon. There was a representative gathering at the graveside, and several wreaths sent testified to the esteem and affection in which Mr. WOODHOUSE was held.

OBITUARY

MRS. E.L. ANDERSON
We regret to announce the death, which took place in Grey's Hospital on Wednesday, of Mrs. E.L. ANDERSON, wife of Dr J.G. ANDERSON, of Amersfoort, Transvaal. The late Mrs. ANDERSON, who was forty-five years of age, had been ailing for some time, when it was deemed advisable that she should come down to the City for a change. A fortnight ago, however, she suddenly became worse, and, despite all that medical aid could do, she passed away as stated.
The deceased was the eldest daughter of the late Mr. Justice FANNIN, and sister to Mr. M.G. FANNIN, of this city. Until recently, her husband was a resident of Ladysmith, of which town he was at one time mayor. Subsequent to vacating the post of chief citizen, however, Dr. ANDERSON proceeded to Amersfoort, where he took up residence.
The late Mrs. ANDERSON, who was much loved and respected by those with whom she had come in contact, will be missed by a large circle of friends, who will join in tendering sympathy to the bereaved family in their sad loss.
The funeral took place yesterday morning, the remains being conveyed from S. Saviour's Cathedral, where a short service was held, to the Church of England Cemetery, where the Very Rev. Dean BARKER conducted the burial service.
The chief mourners were: Dr. J.G. ANDERSON (husband), Master Ian ANDERSON (son), Messrs. J.G. FANNIN, M.G. FANNIN and V.G. FANNIN (brothers), W.G. SHAW, A.G. SHAW and J.G. SHAW (cousins), J.W. HARVEY (brother-in-law) and Bruce HARVEY (nephew).

The funeral of the late Mr. Charles JONES took place yesterday afternoon, the cortege leaving the residence, "Armadale Villa," Town Hill, at 3.30, and proceeding to the Wesleyan Cemetery, where the service was conducted by the Rev. William CLIFF.

OBITUARY

MRS. H.E. PURCELL
Greytown, Aug. 25.
It is with feelings of deep regret that we have to announce the death of Mrs. H.E. PURCELL, which sad event took place at Grey's Hospital, Maritzburg, on Thursday last, after a lingering illness. The body was brought up to Greytown by Thursday night's train, and taken to St. James' Church, where it remained until interred. The late Mrs. PURCELL, who was a Miss MOORE, was born in Durban, in 1850, and was thus 64 years of age. Her parents came to this country under the Byrne Emmigration scheme in the ship "Sovereign." In 1869 she married Mr. William PURCELL, who pre-deceased her nearly 4 years ago.The marriage took place at Bishopstowe, where Mr. PURCELL was employed as printer and compositor to the late Bishop COLENSO.
About 40 years ago Mr. and Mrs. PURCELL removed to Seven Oaks, where they started business a the Roadside Hotel, now Seven Oaks Hotel. Here they remained for about 15 years carrying on a very successful business, and 25 years ago moved to Greytown, and opened the Plough Hotel, which they carried on up to the time of Mr. PURCELL's death, nearly four years ago. The late Mrs. PURCELL was of a very retiring disposition, and was always to be found in her home, seldom or ever appearing at any public function, and just living for her home and children. She leaves behind her three sons and five daughters, for all of whom the greatest sympathy is felt in their sad bereavement. Her one unmarried daughter Nellie was in constant attendance at her bedside during her last illness, and was untiring in her devotion.
The funeral service was held at St. James' Church, Canon PENNINGTON being the officiating clergyman, while the church was quite filled with relatives and friends. The chief mourners were Messrs. Arthur and Harry PURCELL (sons) and Mrs. Alf MOORE (brother), while the pall-bearers were Messrs. R.S. GEORGE, J.J. MEEK, W.C. ELBOURNE, C.R. BROOK, S. CARTER and A.W. DAVEY. The coffin was covered with beautiful floral tributes, amongst them being from the following relatives and friends:- Willie and Annie; Arthur, Harry, Nellie; Alfred; Bob and Flora; Jack, Dorsie and Whitty; Malcolm and Edie; Mr and Mrs HM BALDING, Bill WHETTENHALL, Mr and Mrs GILSON, Mr and Mrs HUBER, Mrs LYTTLE and children, Mr and Mrs RALPH, Mrs FITZGERALD, Mrs FOLEY, Mr and Mrs W CARTER, Mr and Mrs BARRETT, Mr and Mrs Frank HANDLEY, Mrs POOLE, Mr GB NEWMARCH, Miss NEWMARCH, Mr and Mrs BARHAM, Mr and Mrs C PENNEY, Doreen, and Mr and Mrs SLATTER.

MR. J.D. HAVEMANN

I also regret to have to report the death early this morning of Mr. J.D. HAVEMANN, second son of Mr. and Mrs. HAVEMANN, "Bridgeford," In my last week's notes, I mentioned that Mr. HAVEMANN was laid up by having over-strained himself in lifting heavy bags of mealies. Nothing serious was anticipated by his relatives or friends, and his death came as a severe shock to one and all – no one expecting such a sad ending. The late Mr. HAVEMANN was 35 years of age, and unmarried. To his sorrowing parents, brothers and sisters, the deepest sympathy of the whole community is extended in their sad and irreparable loss. Mr. HAVEMANN has lived his whole life in this district, with his parents at their farm "Bridgeford," and was of a quiet and unassuming disposition, and lived the life of a simple farmer.
The funeral took place on Tuesday at "Umvoti Poort," the farm residence of Mr. Dan HAVEMANN.

MR. GEORGE VOWDEN
We regret to report the death, which occurred at Grey's Hospital yesterday morning, of Mr. George VOWDEN, well-known in Durban, several years back, as a successful owner of race horses, and recently engaged in farming pursuits in the Mooi River district. The deceased received injuries form a grass fire, on Monday last, which necessitated his removal to the hospital, where he succumbed. The funeral will take place from Grey's Hospital at 10 o'clock this morning.

Capetown, September 4.
The death took place last night of Mr. H.M. ARDERNE, one of the best-known citizens of Capetown, at the age of 81, after a short illness. Mr. ARDERNE's garden at Claremont was widely famous. – Reuter.

MR. WM. SANDSTROM
The death took place at Grey's Hospital, on Thursday morning, of Mr. Wm. SANDSTROM, of the carriage-building department of the South Africa Railways. The late Mr. SANDSTROM, who was a native of Finland, has been ailing for some five weeks, and he passed away as stated at eight o'clock on Thursday, death being due to heart failure. Deceased, who was 57 years of age, was a member of the Fire Brigade of the S.A.R., and much esteemed among those with whom he had come into contact. He leaves a widow, and son and one daughter to mourn his loss, and to whom sympathy will be extended in their bereavement.
The funeral took place yesterday afternoon, leaving Grey's Hospital at four o'clock, and proceeding to the Presbyterian Cemetery, where the burial was conducted by the Rev. A.G. BRIDGE.

SIR JAMES WHITNEY
London, September 27.
The death has occurred of Sir James WHITNEY, Premier of Ontario. – Reuter's Special Service.
Sir James WHITNEY, K.C.M.G., held the Premiership of Ontario since 1905. He was born at Ontario on October 2nd 1849, was a barrister by profession, and was a Lieut.-Col. in the Militia Reserve.
