He was born in City Road, Islington, London, the son of James and Lydia GRIFFIN. He joined the Royal Navy and fought on shore in the Egyptian campaign of 1801 until the surrender of Alexandria. In 1805 he served at Trafalgar in HMS Mars under Captain Duff. He married Sara YATES at All Hallows Church, Tower, in 1809.
