BEKENDMAKING
Het heft den Almagtigen behaagd my hartelyke geliefde echtgenoot, den hr. Jacobus Paulus ODENDAAL, van myne zyde weg te nemen. Meer dan 46 jaren mogt ik met hom eene gelukkige echtverbindtenis genieten, tot da thy op den 26 July, 1858, in den ouderdom van 71 jaren, 3 maanden en 29 dagen, overleed, na eene korte ongesteldheid.

SHOCKING DEATH

Mr. Jacobus de la REY, while returning from Winburg to his homestead, in his spring-cart unfortunately, and in a way that cannot be accounted for, ignited 40lbs of gunpowder, which he had just purchased for himself and neighbours and which was contained in the cart on which he was driving. The awful result was that poor de la REY was blown to pieces, and the horses then bolted with the cart on fire, until they reached the next farmhouse, when they stopped. The remains of Mr. de la REY were interred yesterday. Poor man! He left Winburg a few hours before full of hope that the good spirit of unanimity lately exhibited among the more respectable portion of the Winburgers and the “coming man,” indicated “a good time coming” Mr. de la REY’s son; a lad of 16 was standing near the cart when the accident happened, and is also dreadfully mutilated – no hopes of his recovery. Mr de la REY had with him a sum of money in gold, of which, or anything else that was in the cart, not a vestige can be found.

OVERLEDEN op den 7 Augustus te Korrana Fontein na eene ziekte van twee maanden, Johanna Margaretha BOTHA, geb. van [KOHR] in den ouderdom van 41 jaren, 9 maanden. Zy laat acht kinderen met haren echtgenoot na om het verlies te betreuren.

De volgende gevangenenen zyn alhier ontvlugte weten:
Oscar MORRIS, hoog 5 voet 8½ duim, donker- bruin haar, gryze oogen, knevels, linkerhand eene snede in de eerste of voorste vinger
Johan FRIEDRICH, hoog 5 voet 7 duim, donker-bruin haar, gryze oogen, knevels en merk op het linkeroog.
Edward SELWIEN, hoog 5 voet 11 duim, ligt of blond haar, gryze oogen, een lidteeken op het regteoog, en mist een tand
De bovengenoemde gevangenen zyn Duitschers en worden verondrsteld dezerteurs te zyn van het Duitsche Legioen; zy zyn het laatst gezien in de rigting van Colesberg, en hudden toen by zicht drie paarden van de volgende omschryving:
Een bruin rypaard, met een ‘hilder en kol, en witte achter pooten, linker voorpoot wit, met een weinig wit haar waar de halster over de neus komt, omtrent 6 jaren oud, was onlangs beslagen aan de twee voorpooten.

Door de ondergeteekenden als Executeuren Dtief in den boedel van wylen Willem Abraham BESTER, overleden naby Lydenburg op den 26 April, 1858, en dezelfs nagelaten weduwe Elsije Magdalena BROEKMAN, worden by deze allen diegenen die iets te vorderen hebben of vershuldigd zyn, in den voorgenoemden boedel opgeroepen, om uiterlyk binnen en tyd van zes maanden na heden den bewyzen van hunnen schuld te komen betalen aan en by een der ondergeteekenden, en zullen na die tyd geen schuld vorderingen die ten laaste dier boedel inkomen als geldig aangenoemen of uitbetaald worden, door dien alsdan en vereffening dier boedel zal plaats vinden, en zullen allen nalatigen schuldenaren geregterlyk tot betaling hunner schuld gebracht worden

FATAL ACCIDENT
A young man named John BROWN, the son of a late trader, called Richard BROWN, whose father resided and died a few years since in this town, met with a severe accident from the accidental discharge of a gun, on the 11th inst., near Modder River, about couple of hours from Bloemfontein. It appears that the deceased, who had taken an engagement as a farm-servant, having suddenly met with a snake, had placed the butt of his gun on the reptile, and while striving to crush it with a stone, hit the cock instead of the animal, whereby the entire discharge was lodged in his thigh. He was brought into town and had the best medical treatment, but though a powerful man, nature rapidly gave way, in consequence, as it would seem, partly from exhaustion from loss of blood at the time of the accident and partly from the great heat of the weather, and died in about 24hours.

Crediteuren in bovengemelde boedel worden hiermede opgeroepen, hunne vorderingen, vergezeld van behoorlyke bewyzen, aan een der ondergeteekenden, ten hunnen kantore te Bloemfontein, binnen den tyd van twee maanden na heden, in te dienen; en debiteuren het door hen verschuldige binnen denzelfden ty den ter zelfden plaats, te voldoen.

Tragical Occurance – About noon on Saturday last, Mr. James CAMERON, who resides at Mr. ALLISON’s farm “Tempo” about 50 minutes ride from Bloemfontein; reported at the Landdrost’s office, that he had that morning discovered the corpse of a white man half buried in a hole, and covered with loose bushes, about [100] yards from Mr. ALLISON’s dwelling. The Clerk of the Peace, Dr KRAUSE, Fieldcornet GRIFFIN, and several officers, immediately proceeded to the spot, and found the body of one Patrick SMITH, a labourer who was formerly in the employment of Mr J. KELLY, mason of this town, with a gunshot wound through the left breast, and passing out at the back. As it was known that this man had on the Tuesday previously left town with a wagon, in company with one J.E. STONE, formerly a carpenter in this town, and now a farmer, residing near the opposite bank of Modder River, on Doorn Spruit, and a Kafir servant; and as the wagon, STONE and the Kaffir had been seen near the spot where the body was discovered, suspicion naturally fell on STONE. On Sunday, therefore a man was dispatched to Fieldcornet MULLER’s, with a warrant, and instructions to that gentleman to have them apprehended; but the person was obliged, by the dangerously swollen state of Modder River, to return the same day. On Tuesday morning, however, the messenger having succeeded in delivering the letter to the fieldcornet, it was found that STONE had left his house on the previous evening, it is supposed for Vaal River. Finding the Kafir servant, however, he apprehended and bought him to town, and he is now in the gaol. There appears too much reason for believing, that the violent death of this unfortunate man has, in some way arisen, during a drunken quarrel. It further appears, that the Kafir had informed the servants on the neighbouring farms of what had occurred; the servants had told their masters, and consequently it was known to STONE’s friends and neighbours before it was in Bloemfontein. STONE is married to the daughter of a respectable Dutch farmer, and has, we hear, left her together with his four children.

DEATH BY LIGHTNING
We learn from a person just returned from the lower Vet Rivier, that Mr. Theodolpus PIETERSE was instantaneously struck dead in front of his house on the 13th inst by the electric fluid entering his head and passing out at his feet. We have also heard of several instances of horses and cattle being struck dead from the same cause during the thunder-rains, which have been so prevalent in many parts of the country.

LOCAL

Mr. Johannes Janse van RENSBURG, member of Volksraad, lost about a week ago his second wife, a young and seemingly healthy woman of 20 years of age, to whom he had been but recently married. It appears that a sudden cold was the proximate cause of the poor young woman’s premature death.

Mr. Piet Lafras UYS, of Harrismith, who would have sat during the late Volksraad session as member for Harrismith, but for some irregularity in his election, died about 14 days ago, at the farm of Andries CRONJE, on Sand River, about three hours beyond Winburg. It appears that Mr. UYS, on leaving Bloemfontein on his return homeward, was affected by cold and fever, which so rapidly increased upon him as to terminate fatally before he had accomplished the half of his return journey.
