FIRE AT RONDEBOSCH
The alarming fire which broke out on Tuesday morning at Rondebosch, has not yet been wholly extinguished. As far as we have learned, although every exertion has been made by the military and the inhabitants, it has as yet been found impossible to discover all the numerous portions of the woods in the vicinity of the destroyed properties, which still are on fire, and to prevent the continual recurrences of alarm from this cause. The fire originated, it is said, in some dry brushwood at the back of Mr. James THOMSON’s residence. Communicating to this building, which was thatched, it soon destroyed not merely the House, (the property of Mr. M J. LOUW,) but the larger proportion of Mr. THOMSON’s furniture. Thence Mr. LOUW’s adjacent property, the former residence of Mr. Daniel CLOETE, and now occupied by Mr. RIVERS, the Treasurer-General, was seized, - and in a few minutes, although having a slated roof, was completely destroyed. Mr. PRINCE’s residence, those of Major PIERS, Mr. SUFFERT, Mr. COZENS, and Dr. HADDINGH, - the mill of Mr. ATTWELL, a portion of Mr. MORRIS’s property, were all destroyed in the course of the afternoon, very little check being possible to be given to the fire, chiefly from the difficulty of obtaining water, and the thorough dryness of the wood, and of everything else that could burn, in the vicinity. Other properties were in great danger from time to time during the day – as Mr. T. JONES’ residence, the property of Mr. HARE, Mr. LANDSBERG’s residence, Mr. UPJOHN’s, RANDALL’s, &c. On the Camp Ground, Mrs. HOME’s cottage, occupied by Mr. W.J. SMITH was consumed – although at a considerable distance from the chief scene of the fire, Mrs. HOME’s own residence, Dr. DROSSEL’s, and Mr. ROBERTSON’s in the same vicinity were for some time also thought to be in danger. In the night Mr. BREDA’s forage store opposite to Mr. LOUW’s, was consumed, the fire having been successfully warded from it all the previous afternoon. The loss sustained, in the whole, cannot be reckoned at much less than about £30,000 in actual property destroyed and injured. But the misery, and in some cases even danger of life, caused to families accustomed not merely to comfort but luxury, has been such as money cannot compensate. Yesterday afternoon there was still much alarm – but much effort was being made to take precaution against the extension of the fire. Mr. J. D. THOMSON, Capt. JAMIESON of the Port Office, M. DUPRAT, and a number of other gentlemen are named as having been very instrumental in checking the fire during yesterday. But in spite of all efforts another valuable building belonging to Mr. MORRIS has been destroyed. At the time of going to press considerable apprehension was still entertained, less the fire should extend, in the present dry state of the woods, towards Wynberg. Smaller properties besides the above have also been injured to a greater or less extent. It is feared that the Insurances will only cover about £12,000 of the losses hitherto sustained; of which, we believe, about £6,000 will have to be borne by the “Protecteur,” about the “Equitable” and “Cape of Good Hope” respectively, and £1,000 by the “Commercial.” The only other local office, the “South Africa,” appears not to be liable for any damage as yet caused.

FRONTIER NEWS
SERIOUS COMMOTION. – By way of British Kaffraria we have intelligence of a rather serious commotion between the Amapondas and some native Refugees residing on an out station connected with the Wesleyan Missionary Institution of Beecham Wood. It appears that this out station was suddenly attacked about a fortnight ago by a strong body of Amapondas, under a son of Faku’s, and that one of the attacked party was killed and five were wounded. As is customary in native feuds, the whole of the station was fired, one little girl being burned to death in the hut in which she dwelt. There was a report that the Missionary, Mr. THOMAS, had been killed in the affray, but we believe this is entirely without foundation, the usual place of residence of that gentleman being at Clarkbury, a considerable distance from the scene of commotion. It is suspected that in dealing with the Amaponda question, which has recently occupied attention, our government has been rather too facile in making concessions – than which nothing can be more dangerous to the peace of this country. – G.T.
