HIGHWAY ROBBERY AND ATTEMPT AT MURDER
On Tuesday evening the 28th December, at about 8 o’clock pm, as Mr. DRURY of Uitenhage was travelling along the high road, at about two hours on horseback (12 miles) beyond Salt Pan’s Neck, a shot was suddenly fired from the bush, which killed his pack-horse. Mr. DRURY seeing two men near the road-side immediately fired, and has reason to believe must have wounded one of the marauders. His horse then started off the road to a distance of about fifteen yards, when another miscreant suddenly appeared on his right hand, close by his horse’s side, who fired at him. The ball fortunately missed his body, but struck him in his bridle arm, about six inches above the wrist, passing quite through the arm. Mr. DRURY finding himself disabled, and being perfectly alone, put spurs to his horse and rode at speed for about quarter of an hour, when he halted, being almost exhausted from lack of blood. He then dismounted, reloaded his gun, and contrived to bandage his wound sufficiently to enable him to reach the nearest farm without further accident. The saddle bags on the horse which was killed contained, unfortunately, £500 in gold, for the recovery of which Mr. DRURY has offered a reward of £100.

On Sunday the 16th instant, finding that my cattle did not come up at kraaling time, I suspected something was wrong. I accordingly started off with two others in search of them, and found the whole flock, amounting to about 90 head, had been driven off by about 9 or 10 Kafirs. The herd (a Fingo) was also missing. Mr. S. TARR, to whom about 30 head of the stolen cattle belonged, immediately rode off to Mandy’s Police Station to report, and with a few of the Police forelayed at Faku’s road but without success. Next morning having mustered a good party we started in pursuit at daybreak, following the spoor from Lushington Valley close past the Police Station at Waay Plaats, where we were joined by a party of the Police, and down into the dense bush in the Kooms where we overtook the rascals with the whole of the cattle. We immediately opened fire on them, severely wounding two of them and recaptured the whole of the cattle, minus one – we also took one gun and a bundle of assegais. There is every reason to believ that the herd was drowned in a large pool of water in Lushington Valley when the cattle were taken, as his spoor was traced to the water’s edge. I beg to offer my sincere thanks to J.H.B. WIENAND Esq, Resident Magistrate, Lieuts. SURMON and MANDY and all the Burghers who accompanied me for the readiness with which they turned out to assist in the pursuit.

Two other cases of sudden death in Port Elizabeth have struck the community with awe, and have brought home to the hearts and understandings of the people the conviction of the uncertainty and brevity of human life. In the first instance, that of Mr. Samuel ONIONS, we find a young man in the prime of life and universally esteemed by the inhabitants, suddenly struck down by the invisible foe. Some forty-eight hours sufficed for the work of death to be accomplished. Mr. ONIONS was a young man, we verily believe, without an enemy – of the most kind and courtly disposition, and prospering greatly in the management of one of the largest retail businesses in the town. An attack, said to be of dysentery, suddenly, an in a few hours, removed this useful member of society from our midst at the early age of 33 years, leaving many to mourn his loss. His remains were accompanied to their last resting place in this world on Tuesday last.
In the second instance a young man named Thomas LOVETT, in the employ of Mr. REYNOLDS of Port Elizabeth, retired to rest, leaving orders to be called early in the morning to accompany a friend on an excursion to the country. When at six o’clock the next morning a young man proceeded to call him he was found dead in his bed. We record these instances of sudden death from no desire to parade the matters before the public, but merely in fulfilment of the duty we owe to society to record these solemn warnings of the uncertainty of human life, and of the necessity of being prepared for that final (earthly) change of death which comes as suddenly and unexpectedly on the youthful as on the aged, and knows no distinction in rank or station.
