It is with deep regret that we record the death of Ensign PALACIOS – fine young officer in the Cape Mounted Rifles, caused by what is said to have been an accident on the part of the surgical operator, Dr. EDDIE. It seems that the unfortunate deceased had been smitten while on severe duty in the field by a coup de soleil. While convulsed by this stroke, in attempting to bleed him, the arm operated upon was so severely lacerated that, in spite of every means to prevent it, violent inflammation of the superior part of the limb ensued, until at length amputation was deemed necessary. The experiment was made, and the sufferer sank under the operation. The lamented deceased was the scion of a noble Spanish house, being the grandson of the Marquis PALACIOS – Captain General of the Balearic Isles, with whom Lord COLLINGWOOD entered into a treaty at the early part of the Peninsular War. His disembarkation, it is said, at Tarragona, with 4,000 men and thirty-seven pieces of artillery, caused great joy, and a surprising eagerness to take the field. The deceased was highly esteemed by his brother officers, and gave promise of becoming a most valuable officer in H.M. Service. During the severe affair with the enemy, when Quartermaster GORDON and Lieut. MELVIN fell, he distinguished himself by his activity and bravery. It is said that he was a family connection of Lady SMITH.

DR. EDDIE
Fort Hare, March 9th 1851
To the Editor of the Frontier Times,
Sir, A paragraph conveying a most false and malicious libel on my character as a medical man having appeared in the Graham’s Town Journal of yesterday’s date, to the purport that the death of Ensign PALACIOS, of the Cape Mounted Rifles, had been caused by my having attempted to bleed him while convulsed, and by my having so severely lacerated the arm by this attempt that, in spite of every precautionary measure, inflammation of the upper part of the limb supervened, so as to render amputation necessary, under which the sufferer sank.
I trust you will do me the justice to insert the following true statement of my attendance on this officer:
On Saturday 15th February Ensign PALACIOS was found by me in Lushington-valley, half an hour after sun-set, lying on his face in a pool of blood, with swoln and distorted features, and life nearly extinct. I had him roused up and bled in the arm, but blood did not flow until water dashed in his face revived him a little; in about ten minutes after this convulsions came on, and returned several times, leaving behind imperfect consciousness. After binding up the arm, and placing him in bed, I remained by him nearly half an hour, and then went to report the circumstances to Major-General SOMERSET, leaving his servant with him.
On my return I found him setting up in bed, leaning on the arm in which he had been bled, and a civilian holding a cup to his lips, with something in it which he said the invalid had asked him for – part of the contents of this cup I, after tasting them and shewing them to others, threw away. Vomiting came on soon after this, which with the exertion of getting up caused me to tie up the arm afresh three times that evening, after which his stomach became quiet.
Next day, Feb 16th, the weather was very sultry and oppressive, and my patient told me that he had strained his tied up arm a good deal in holding on by the wagon while descending Peffer’s Kop, and at the drift near Woburn, where the wagon was nearly upset, but there was neither bleeding nor swelling of the arm.
On the third day, Monday 17th February, I removed both bandage and lint, washed the arm, and left it bare; there was then neither swelling nor bleeding, and the lips of the wound adhered.
On the morning of the fourth day, Tuesday 18th Feb, I found slight inflammation around the lips of the wound, and a little watery fluid oozing therefrom, on which I applied a little lint dipped in water. At 3 o’clock pm of this day Ensign PALACIOS came to me in an excited state, saying that while making an exertion with his tender arm, and leaning on it, he had made it bleed. Staff Assistant-Surgeon BLACK was with me at the time, and we immediately placed lint on the wound, and applied a bandage from the wrist to the elbow joint. From this time the swelling of the limb appeared but only in the fore-arm, and it did not spread above the wound until Wednesday afternoon, 19th Feb, after which it increased considerably all round.
On Thursday the 20th Feb, being anxious about the progress of this case, I applied to Major-General SOMERSET not to go out with the patrol the next morning as it was not my patrol duty, I having been on every one for the last two months; but on Friday morning. Feb 21st, at 2 o’clock am, I was obliged to proceed with it, and left Ensign PALACIOS in the charge of Dr. REID, Surgeon RB 91st Regiment, who, I have no doubt, did everything that skill and attention could do to counteract the fatal habit of body to which my poor patient had also fallen a victim, before bleeding had been resorted to.
I am Sir &c
W. EDDIE, Surgeon
Cape Mounted Rifles, in charge.
Statement of Staff Assistant-Surgeon BLACK
Being in the field with Dr. EDDIE at the time (Feb 15th) that Ensign PALACIOS was taken ill, and having seen him that night and every day subsequently, till Feb 21st, when I went out with the next patrol, I believe the above statement of his case, as far as I am aware of the circumstances, to be perfectly correct.
(Signed) W. BLACK, Staff Assistant-Surgeon
Fort Hare, March 9th 1851.
