IMPORTANT FROM THE CAPE OF GOOD HOPE
We have journals from Cape Town to the 28th May and from Graham’s Town to the 19th of the same month. The news contained in them is of a nature to excite serious apprehensions.
In brief, the colonists are up as one man to resist the introduction of convicts to the settlement, and the language used by many is of the strongest description. But what is of more importance than strong language in the mouths of unknown or uninfluential speakers and writers, not one voice is raised in defence of the government measure, and scarcely one in way of objection to the violent expressions used by many. Hitherto a portion of the press has stood by government. The South African Advertiser, which has for many years been remarkable for its conservative and cautious tone, records an unreserved protest against the introduction of convicts, and has moreover decidedly gone into a general opposition to Earl GREY and his system of administration. The Graham’s Town Journal, a paper remarkable for intelligence and independence, may be said to be even violent in its opposition to the introduction of convicts.
As indications of the temper of the colony on this subject we subjoin a report of the proceedings at a great open air meeting of the inhabitants of Cape Town and its vicinity.

To John FAIRBAIRN Esq, Editor of the S.A. Commercial Advertiser, Cape Town
Fort Beaufort, Nov 9th 1849
Sir,
We the Undersigned, inhabitants of Fort Beaufort and Winterberg, observing with regret that no public notice has been taken in this place of the late cowardly and atrocious attack made upon you, consider it to be a public duty to express our sincere sympathy with you, and to assure you that we are deeply sensible of the great and lasting claims to public gratitude and respect which you have established, by the brilliant talents you have exhibited, the unwavering zeal you have shown, and the unmoved steadfastness you have displayed throughout the present unhappy contest respecting the Convict question.
We also take the present opportunity of expressing our sincere grief that His Excellency Sir H. SMITH should have been induced to state that the inhabitants of the country districts were satisfied with the steps he had taken in reference to the Convict question, and we have no hesitation in affirming that nothing will satisfy the great bulk of the people of the colony but the departure of the Neptune, with her cargo of criminals, and the abrogation of the Order in Council converting the Colony into a Penal Settlement.
We have the honor to be, Sir, your grateful servants
