Wednesday 4 April 1849
To Relatives and Friends
DIED suddenly in his 85th year, at his Residence in Spring Gardens, London, on the 23rd November 1848, my much esteemed Brother-in-law Sir John BARROW Bart. Up to the period of his sudden demise, he continued to enjoy the use of his bodily and mental faculties, in a degree which seldom falls to the lot of such an advanced age – as the various works which he has lately given to the public abundantly testify. In addition to other important offices, among which was that of Private Secretary to Lord MACARTNEY, when Governor of this Colony, he filled with honour to himself, and the highest satisfaction to the various Naval Administrations, the office of Second Secretary of the Admiralty, during the long period of 40 years; and died respected and regretted by all parties.
