In the course of the day the fire communicated with the woods and raged with extreme violence through the wood estates belonging to Messrs. MOSTERD, EKSTEEN, DE SMIDT and CLOETE, where considerable damage was sustained. About 3 o’clock two fatigue parties from 72nd and 98th Regiments were ordered out, and by their active and zealous exertions, with the help of the slaves and others from the neighbourhood, the flames were extinguished and the further loss of property prevented. The Attorney General, Col. PEDDIE, Major CLOETE, the Resident Magistrate, and other civil and military personages were present, suggesting means for stopping the raging element.

His inconsolable widow, who after a marriage of fifteen years is now destined with her five helpless children to mourn her irreparable loss, has found, however, in the number and readiness of the persons, who, on hearing of his dangerous circumstances, hastened to his secluded dwelling, the consoling conviction that the misfortunes which the deceased suffered during the latter part of his life had not deprived him of the esteem and friendship of all well thinking people. His widow therefore takes this painful opportunity of returning her sincerest and heartfelt acknowledgements to those friends.
