DIED at Port Elizabeth after a short illness, George Isaiah, third son of Mr. I. TITTERTON, deeply regretted by his parents and relatives.

UITENHAGE CASE OF MURDER
HERMANUS HERMANUS TRIED AT UITENHAGE FOR MURDER ON 27 MARCH 1857
It appeared from the evidence that on a certain evening during the month of September last the prisoner committed a series of violent attacks upon his wife. She was lying on her bed upon his return from work. The prisoner, without any apparent provocation, went up to her and kicked her on the forehead, between the eyes. She remonstrated with him, when he kicked her a second time. He then pulled her over, and while she was lying on her back he trod upon her breast and stomach, wearing at the time a pair of thick Blucher boots. He afterwards took a piece of lighted wood from the hearth and burned her in the face, again treading upon her in a most brutal manner. He then took a knife, which was however arrested from him by a bystander (a female); he again trod upon her face, tearing away all the burned skin.
From the evidence given to the Medical Officer who was called in upon the occasion, it appeared that when he entered the apartment where the unfortunate victim was lying a shocking sight presented itself. She was immersed in a pool of blood, the walls besmeared in a similar manner, and pieces of flesh adhering to them. Her body was [….] scorched and bruised, and the skull laid bare to a considerable extent, the scalp being almost totally beaten off. Both ears were split, and a portion of the right hand entirely beaten away. She was removed to the hospital but the next morning death put an end to her sufferings.
On a post mortem examination the Surgeon gave it as his opinion that [extra…..] blood resting on the brain was the immediate cause of death.
Sentence of death was passed upon the prisoner, the Judge holding out no hopes of a commutation of sentence. We believe the death warrant has been signed for his execution, which is to take place in a few days.

DIED at Cradock on Wednesday the 6th inst, in the eightieth year of her age, Janet MUNRO, widow of the late Revd. John MUNRO of the London Missionary Society, whose memory is still revered by many in this Colony.
All who knew the late Mrs. MUNRO will most ready pronounce that in her all the noble characteristics of a woman and Christian were ever present. With deceased the grave may be said to have closed over the last of her family – her husband and three sons having all died within the last ten years.
Friends at a distance will please accept this intimation.
