Double Bathing Fatality.

Two Johannesburg residents who were spending a holiday at Amanzimtoti were drowned while bathing on Sunday. They were: Ellen CHARLES (22), of Crown Street, Belgravia; Pierre VAN RYNEVELD (26), a railwayman, of Park Street, Belgravia. A crowd of 100 people watched a thrilling attempt to rescue the drowning pair, who were swept past the breakers. Miss CHARLES and Mr. VAN RYNEVELD, whose wife is at present in Johannesburg, were bathing, not in the safety pool, but between the river and the pool, from a sand bank that lies on the breaker line. It appears that Miss CHARLES was carried off the sand bank by the backwash. Being unable to swim, she at once cried out for help. Mr. VAN RYNEVELD plunged in and tried to save her; but the two were swept into deep water, where Mr. VAN RYNEVELD disappeared. Queenstown listeners in were informed on Sunday evening that Sir Pierre VAN RYNEVELD had been drowned, but happily the distinguished Director of the Air Service is still in the Rehoboth country.

Death in a Tank.

News has reached Worcester that a well-known builder, named HAMILTON, over 60 years of age, was found drowned in the farmers' wine tanks at De Doorns. The body was discovered by a workman resting on the thick scum rising from new wine pumped in the previous day. An inquiry is being held into the circumstances. It is presumed that deceased reached in to get a drink and was overcome by the poisonous fumes of old dop remaining in the tank from last season.

Obituary.

News is to hand of the death of Mrs. WHINDUS, widow of the late Captain E.J. WHINDUS, formerly of this town. Mrs. WHINDUS, who had been residing at Capetown for seven or eight months, had been in very indifferent health for some time past, and passed away on Sunday. She leaves a family of three daughters and two sons to mourn their loss.

Sudden Death on Tennis Court.

Quite a gloom was cast over Queenstown yesterday afternoon when it became known that Mr. G.S. GARDNER had died suddenly while engaged in a game of tennis on the Town Courts, "Gill," by which name he was so familiarly known to all in Queenstown, left his home shortly after two o'clock, apparently in the best of health, for his usual afternoon at tennis. In the first sett he played, partnered by Dr. RITCHIE, all went well for a time, when suddenly, without any warning whatever, GARDNER collapsed, fell to the ground, and in a very short while the doctor pronounced him dead. The tragic suddenness of it all staggered all present, and the news soon spread, and expressions of the deepest sympathy were heard on all sides. Guildford Samuel GARDNER was a Queenstown boy, and after leaving the Boys' High School entered the services of Messrs. Charles BROWN and Co. He joined the firm of Messrs. MORUM Bros., Ltd., a quarter of a century ago, and for years has been manager of the wool and produce department. "Gill," who was 56 years of age, entered largely into the sporting life of Queenstown, and for many years was a leading member of the Swifts football team, where he played at scrum-half. He was also a member of the Amateur Athletic Association, and in his younger days was a splendid runner and a man to reckon with in the long jump. "Gill" was an enthusiastic worker on behalf of the South African Party, and was recording secretary of the Queenswood School Committee. He leaves a widow and three sons to mourn their loss, to whom the deepest sympathy of all will go out in their hour of sad bereavement. Two of the sons, Eric and Laurie, are in business on the Rand, while the youngest, Hector, is serving in the National Bank at Fort Beaufort. Hector arrived home by motor car late last evening. The funeral takes place this afternoon.

The late Mrs. DEWAR.

Her many friends in Queenstown will be sorry to hear of the sad loss sustained by Mrs. TOWNSEND last week through the death of her step-mother, Mrs. DEWAR, in East London. Mrs. DEWAR was the widow of the late Rev. John DEWAR, M.A., of Tarkastad, and was formerly principal of the Girls' High School there. The deceased came to South Africa from the Old Country almost exactly fifty years ago, and was beloved by all who knew her for her many good works of behalf of the town in which she had made her home. On the retirement of Mr. DEWAR from active service some ten years ago, he and his wife moved to East London, where Mr. DEWAR died shortly afterwards. Continuing her residence there, Mrs. DEWAR endeared herself to all who knew her, she being one of the most arduous workers in the welfare of St. George's Church. Deceased, who was in her eighty-fourth year, was buried in East London on Ascension Day, there being a large number of friends present both from St. George's Church and also from Tarkastad.

A Shooting Tragedy.

A fatal gun accident occurred this morning at the shop of CHEMALY Bros., Cathcart Road, resulting in the death of a young married woman, Mrs. Daphne VAN STRATTEN. She and another woman were in the office examining a pistol when it went off. Mrs. VAN STRATTEN being hit and dying in a few minutes.

Missionary Killed by Lion.

A letter has been received at Worcester by relatives of the Rev. Louis MURRAY describing how this fearless missionary in Southern Nyasaland was killed by a lion last month. It appears that he had gone to fetch his wife and children from a distant mountain health resort and had to pass through extensive jungle. Returning with his family and cows, they put up for the night at a trader's store, enclosing the cows in a well-protected kraal. At midnight the bellowing of the cattle roused Mr. MURRAY, who turned out with a gun and found three lions mauling his cows. Firing at one, all three lions cleared out, a wounded lion leaving a blood spoor for some distance. Mr. MURRAY with natives at daybreak set out to hunt the lions, and came upon the wounded one in the jungle. He fired again, and although the lion's head was grazed, the infuriated beast sprang at him. In stepping aside to get in another shot, Mr. MURRAY stumbled over a root and fell on his back, with the lion on top of him. The beast crushed his leg and literally chewed an arm to pulp, while Mr. MURRAY held it by the throat with his uninjured hand. A native seized his master's gun and fired another shot. This scared the lion away. Other natives came to the rescue, and Mr. MURRAY, in an exhausted state, was taken back to the trader's store. He insisted on being taken to the missionary station, but died on the way there.

Child Killed at Durban.

An accident occurred in West Street, Durban, on Sunday afternoon, when Samuel Christian DOVE, the three-year-old son of a well-known local undertaker, was knocked down by a motor car and fatally injured. The child ran out from behind a stationary tramcar and before the motorist could pull up the mudguard of the car struck the child.

We regret to record the death at the early age of thirty years of Mr. Victor WHITEHEAD, a native of Queenstown, where he had a host of friends. A fine Rugby forward, he was formerly a prominent player with the Swifts. The deceased served in the Army for four years during the Great War and went to France with the 1st South African Brigade. Recently he had been living at King Williamstown, where he was engaged in the produce trade, and it was there that he died last Thursday from diabetes after an illness of three weeks only. Much sympathy will be felt for his young widow.

Farm Quarry Fatality.

The Dordrecht correspondent of the "Star" reports that a terrible accident occurred on Thursday on the farm Hangklip, in the Wodehouse district. Mr. A. LABUSCHAGNE was quarrying stones under a krantz with the assistance of his son and the son of a neighbour named OELOFSE, boys of 17 years of age and 10 years. While driving in wedges to split the stone a fall of rock occurred, killing both boys and badly injuring Mr. LABUSCHAGNE. On clearing away the debris the youngest boy was dead, having been killed instantaneously. His head was crushed. The elder boy died soon after being extricated. Mr. LABUSCHAGNE is badly hurt, but is progressing favourably.
