Mournful Accident
On Saturday last while a party of gentlemen from Port Elizabeth were enjoying themselves in having a little boating on the Zwartkops, one of the most distressing accidents which we have ever had to chronicle took place. In tacking through a long reach of the river against a head wind some water must have been shipped, and just as the last tack was being made a sudden squall came down upon the boat under which she took in more water and sank beneath her unsuspecting crew. All made for the banks of the river and all reached, with the exception of Mr. PRETYMAN, one of the party who could not swim. He sunk immediately and was no more – the last that was seen of him being his hand thrust above the water for a moment. Every search was made for his body the same day, and also yesterday, but no account of its having been found has reached us while we write.
