Public Meeting
Of the Sheep Farmers and Agriculturalists of Albany
We, the undersigned Land-owners and Sheep-farmers, being of the opinion that a "Society for the Advancement and Protection of the Interest of the Sheep Farmer and Agriculturalist in Albany" is, in the highest degree, necessary – hereby invite all those who think such a Society desirable to attend a "Public Meeting" to be holden at the Commercial Hall, Graham's Town, on Monday the 13th day of July next, with the permission of His Honour the Lieutenant Governor – when the best means of establishing such a Society will be taken into consideration.
After the Meeting, a Public Dinner will take place at Watson's Hotel.

DIED on Tuesday night, Clara, eldest daughter of Mr. Rice SMITH of Welcome Wood near Sidbury, aged 1 year and 11 months.

DIED on Tuesday fortnight, Leslie, only son of Mr. HUTCHINSON of Sidbury, aged 1 year and 9 months.

MARRIED on Monday week by the Rev J.G. Aveline, at the Baptist Chapel, Graham's Town, Phebe, second daughter of Mr. Philip DIXIE to Mr. George HOW.

We regret to announce the death of Mr. E.J. TOWNSEND, who expired after a short but severe illness, yesterday afternoon. Whilst his loss is irreparable to his family and immediate connexions, it is by no means restricted to them. His amiable and excellent character rendered him a much respected and valuable member of the community at large, and as an officer of the Church, and Superintendent of the Sunday School, at Union Chapel – He was esteemed and loved whilst living, and his memory will long be cherished with affectionate regard.

With respect to the state of Small Pox, at Port Elizabeth, we have been requested to say that, owing to the prompt measures taken by the District Surgeon to vaccinate the inhabitants, the disease has not spread so widely as might have been expected; that there are but four cases now in the Hospital; that at no period were there ever more than seven at one time and that in no single instance has Small-Pox occurred amongst those who have been recently vaccinated. Under these circumstances we hope that the farmers will not allow themselves to be deterred from attending the markets, as usual.

Magistrate's Court, Graham's Town
On Thursday 20th inst Major ARMSTRONG was summoned by Lieut. WADE, for detaining his wife. Mr. JARVIS appeared for the defendant. A son of the Major was examined to prove that Mrs. WADE was residing with her father; also, a servant belonging to the family. Miss ARMSTRONG was also included in the summons but did not appear. Mr. James STONE (Clerk to Mr. BARNES) stated that early in the present month he delivered a letter to Major ARMSTRONG, demanding Mrs. WADE from him, to which he said he would send an answer. Mr. JARVIS called for a copy of this letter, which, plaintiff being unable to produce, the case was lost. The damages were laid at £10. Major ARMSTRONG is again summoned to appear before the Court tomorrow.

An address (in two parts), recently delivered at two successive Monthly Meetings of the Port Elizabeth Total Abstinence Society, in Union Chapel, by an individual who, by abstaining from "Alcohol" in every form, has been delivered, for more than Two Years past, from one of the most dreadful, hereditary and periodical Complaints – of more than twenty years standing – that ever attacked the Human System.
Subscribers' Names will be received by Mr. BRICKHILL, Mr. COLLARD and Mr. Henry JONES of Port Elizabeth – at the Office of this Paper – and the Booksellers of the Colony.

With reference to the Advertisement published in the "Government Gazette" of the 21st August last, calling on all persons indebted to the above Estate to pay their respective Debts to Mrs. TOWNSEND, and the usual period of Six Weeks having expired from the date of said Notice, the Undersigned hereby call on such persons as have neglected to discharge their Accounts to pay the same forthwith to the First Undersigned, as those Debtors, neglecting so to do, will be prosecuted against at law. Those Creditors who have not sent in their claims are warned so to do without delay, in order to prevent loss to themselves.

Beaufort, September 19th 1840
Melancholy Occurrence: - A short time ago information was received here of a distressing occurrence, caused by lightning, that took place in this district. A farmer, named Dirk IMMELMAN, residing in the Niewveld, was standing in front of the door of his dwelling, giving orders to the shepherdess about the lamb flock, during a thunderstorm, when he was suddenly struck to the earth by lightning, and killed upon the spot. The unfortunate man has left a wife and a young family.
